Robin's Pincushion

My friendly garden robin wasn't in sight, but I spotted his pincushion on a the scrambling rose which has reverted to its wild state due to lack of maintenance on my part!

The spiny growth is caused by a gall wasp. It is harmless to the plant, but since it is growing on a sucker and "in the wrong place" I will cut it out later in the autumn.
