Life through the lens...

Beningbrough Hall

Making the most of another glorious day!
( After huge traffic jams on the way!!)

Beningbrough Hall near York.
Showing the greenhouse and grape vine, peach tree, laundry, walled garden and clock tower, and various flowers.

Late Georgian mansion built in 1716 by John Bourchier 111, to replace his family's modest Elizabethan manor, built by Sir Ralph Bourchier in 1556.

It was saved from demolition in 1916 when it was bought by a wealthy heiress, Enid Scudamore-Stanhope, Countess of Chesterfield, who restored the property.

During the second world war it was occupied by the Royal Air Force.

When the Countess died in 1957, the estate was acquired by the National Trust, after it had been accepted by the government in lieu of death duties, at a cost of £29,250.

It is now mainly used for showing paintings from the National Portrait Gallery.

Although we had an enjoyable day out, it is not a place I would go back to.
We have many more interesting stately homes and gardens in Yorkshire.
Such as Newby Hall (my favourite)
Harewood House
Castle Howard
All privately owned, and with the families still living there.
I think that is what makes them special. Historic houses, but still homes.

Forgot to mention a big bonus today was the freshly picked potatoes, Raspberries, and broad beans which someone was selling from their garden, at the side of the road, on the way home.
Ate tonight with the BBQ. Delicious!!
