I will try to make a long story short. So in my last book Soapbox, I wrote about flipping a student of mine the middle finger. It was not malicious, and the story is quite funny. I don’t have the time to explain the entire backstory, but just know it is a quirky, funny, innocent story.

Today at Lowe’s, I ran into the kid I flipped off 17 years ago. That was the last time I had seen him. He’s now 35. I told his story at last week’s Oakland inservice, and I told him today that his story had gathered a lot of mileage. We laughed, shook hands, and on our way out, he told his two boys, “Don’t be a pain in the butt to your teachers like I was!” Great connection.
