While on my runs

The enquiry by my greatniece as to whether I had certificates from the calf club days in Waikino and Waihi stimulated me to bring out the two cups I was awarded as a school boy.

The shorter one was awarded when I was 8 years old and had won the regional competition (held in Waihi). The actual cup was kept on the mantelpiece above the fireplace in the sitting room of our house in Waitekauri for a year. My mother kept it shiny. This miniature was mine to keep.

The other small cup was donated to the secondary school I went to by a rugby union club in Hamilton. It was for being the most improved player one year. Even back then I thought that could be interpreted that I had been appalling at the start of the season.
