REGAL

Sandhill Cranes (Grus canadensis); the most common North American crane but still not really common.  I have seen them in the hundreds of thousands along the Platte River in Nebraska.  The sound is deafening.  Large birds can have a wingspan between 5 and 7+ feet.

This is a pair of adults as evidenced by the reddish tops of their heads. Juveniles, almost as tall as the parent birds, will not have this scarlet top.

This duo was strolling some farm fields in search of lunch.  They'll take whatever they can find but are largely herbivores and seed eaters.  Northern sub-species will also feed on berries, small mammals, insects, snails, reptiles and amphibians.
