Marconi
What a wet day! But we made the most of it by cycling around some of the local sights.
We cycled to Poldhu and went up the cliff top to the Marconi museum ( closed today) and Memorial.
Guglielmo Marconi had a theory that radio waves would travel around the Earth’s contours, although others had worked on it. The Italians wouldn’t back him and he went elsewhere . In 1901 he established that a Morse signal could be sent from Poldhu here in Cornwall to St John’s Newfoundland, although there is some doubt about the scientific accuracy of his claims.
The main photo is the Marconi memorial on the Cliff top near Poldhu beach.
The strange globe at the top which looks like a cat is a representation of the Earth with a couple of triangles which LooseCanon thinks represent aerials and I wonder if they represent the radio waves going up to the ionosphere and bouncing back, which is how it works. Can’t find out.
The other excitement of the day was that I had a delicious crab sandwich at the tea room in Mullion Cove.
