Passport
Last night was the NumFOCUS Project Summit dinner, where the food was fair, the beer was better, and I had some valuable chats.
However, when I woke this morning, I couldn't find my passport. My guess was that I'd lost it at the restaurant, but it wasn't open until 11:00, so I went to the meeting, but my mind was elsewhere. At the restaurant there was no sign of my passport, but the person in charge last night wouldn't be back in until 14:00. Next stop was the nearest police station to ask whether it had been handed in, and register it as lost. Then I went to the British Consulate for advice, only to be told that I could only see someone by appointment and was handed a piece of paper with phone numbers. As expected, given the Consulate's 2* rating on Google Maps, phoning was useless, so I headed back to the meeting for lunch. I knew that I could get an emergency travel document in two working days, but my flight back is on Sunday. My concerns weren't just getting home, but the fact that I'm due to go to Berlin a week on Tuesday for a two week visit.
After lunch I distracted myself with emails until it was time to return to the restaurant for what felt like the last throw of the dice. But it was there! It had been found by a cleaner, and then put into the safe by the boss - but he'd not left a note for the morning staff.
Relieved, I went back to the police to report it "found", and then returned to the meeting. There I had a lovely long chat with a young developer from Delhi, and attended a useful session on multithreading issues in Python.
