But not until we had enjoyed a welcome farewell breakfast with Cath and Keith at The Sawmill. A very popular cafe in Nether Wasdale. Then at 10.30 we were on the road.
Not to want to miss out on further opportunities to visit English Heritage sites, we stopped at Brougham Castle. Another great structure which I was particularly keen to see, because it was originally 4 stories high with all stories connected by spiral staircases. There is one in the keep still standing and we went right to the top, then along the 4th floor. Amazing views over the Eden Valley.
After an hour, we were back on the road, with another 4 hours ahead of us. We stopped once more for lunch at the farm shop on the A66, then it was A1 M and home. Jon drove the whole way, and I got my laptop out - keen to hit the 70000 word count. Having done some earlier in the week, I was up to 68400. By the time my battery had run out, I’d hit 70,340 so I’m happy with that. I know I must be patient and not rush it, but pleased so far.
We got home at 7.15. Ralph was waiting for us. Henry was not! Neither was he expecting us home today….
We have lots of sorting out to do tomorrow!
It really has been a special week. We are so grateful to have been able to spend this week with Cath and Keith in such a beautiful spot. This part of the Western Lake District really is stunning. Away from the more touristy lakes (Keswick, Windermere) you can appreciate the quiet, the big skies and nature at its best. And of course the mountains. They surround the village of Nether Wasdale and can be seen from every window in the home we were privileged to be able to stay in. Another unforgettable week.
