(251) Diversion

I had intended to ride down to the Forth Road Bridge and over to South Queensferry today but when I got to Dunfermline I could see that I couldn't see the sea so went with Plan B and turned inland instead to stay in the sunshine. Today's blip is a view of the Mary Pit Head winding tower at the site of what was once one of Fife's deepest collieries. The original colliery was opened in 1904 and  the first shaft was sunk to 613m. The second shaft (521m deep) was opened in 1923, and this used the concrete winding gear that’s visible today. The structure is in need of restoration work to reverse and prevent further damage from water ingress which is causing the concrete to spall and crumble, but as yet there doesn't appear to be much progress towards preserving one of the few visible remains of Fife's mining heritage.
