King Alfred

First full day of our holidays here in our comfortable holiday cottage in north Dorset. Our nearest town is Shaftesbury so that was today’s destination. We had a leisurely stroll, walked down and then back up the cobbled Gold Hill (famous for the Hovis advert), then after a coffee stop we visited Shaftesbury Abbey and Museum. The abbey was originally built in the 9th century and one of King Alfred’s daughters was the first Abbesse. It was destroyed during the reformation.

A statue of King Alfred (gifted from a local school of the same name), watches over the ruins and garden.

All in all a good first day.
