The Swan
The last remaining (open) pub in the village. When we moved here (28years ago) there were three pubs … one (The White Horse) closed within a few years.
Of the others, The Red Lion has closed for years, re-opened during the COVID pandemic, closed again and has remained stubbornly closed. It is a Sam Smith’s pub and the brewery owner is notoriously fickle about his tenants and the way the pubs are run….no music, no phones/computers, cash only, and can only sell their own branded beer/spirits etc. It is a shame as they used to do nice food and I am partial to a drop of Sam Smiths Old Brewery Bitter.
The Swan is also known as the “Top Pub” or “Top House”..a reference to it being at the top of two steep roads…Town Hill and Church Hill.
It is very small inside … there is usually a good couple of beers on handpull, and it is not unknown for one madwill to stop off for a pint on the way home from a wander!!
EDIT…cheeky update to add Wide Wednesday tag..thanks to BobsBlips for hosting
