Purple Gallinule

A day to remember…a sighting of a rare purple gallinule a large moorhen like bird confined to the reedbeds of the southern Mediterranean, but also nesting in our local lakes in Jerez de la Frontera. I was able to identify it at once from childhood memories of leafing through my my much-loved volume of ‘The birds of Britain and Europe’
