The Way Out
After our absence from Hill of Tarvit last Sunday, Pat and I return to guide today.
The weather is bright and we have a steady stream of visitors throughout the day. Many of the visitors ask questions. Today’s subjects centre around the paintings and the French furniture collection.
One visitor apparently asked about every painting on display. When I encountered him he was keen to know as much as possible about each one.
We do have our reference notes on each one, and can usually answer most of the questions asked. Some are just too obscure, however, I do point him to several sources which might provide an answer.
Today’s entry photo is of the Great Hall taking from the Ground Floor Corridor.
The thumbnail shows the double doors leading to the entrance vestibule.
When guiding in the Great Hall the volunteer will describe the Hall and give a description of the various rooms to be seen throughout the building.
Interestingly visitors who have explored all there is to see on both floors return down the main stair and should immediately turn right and go through the double doors.
It is interesting to note the high proportion of visitors who appear ‘dazed’ and do not notice the doors as the exit.
If the guide stands near the doors there is no confusion, however, the Great Hall guide can be anywhere in what is quite a large space.
Confusing. Of course, I doubt that Robert Lorimer who designed the house ever imagined that it would be a property of an organisation such as the National Trust for Scotland.
