Grumpy Old Man

Island writing

I was expecting a sunny start to the day as everyone was talking about some good warm days, but it began cool and cloudy. This afternoon was the first meeting of the new season for the u3a Creative Writing Group, to be held at Balliemore Farm on the island of Kerrera.

I spent some time this morning on a few gardening jobs, including potting up yesterday’s bargain palm, and made up a picnic to take to Kerrera. It’s not the easiest place to get to, the ferry slip being a couple of miles along a single track road from the south edge of Oban. There’s very little space to park and cars are squeezed on to the grass verge for a quarter of a mile from the slip, creating mud and congestion. I think a lot of the cars are island residents who probably keep 4x4s on the island. The ferry only takes 1 car and 12 pedestrians.

Mrs M took me down as she would need the car this afternoon and I joined a group of fellow u3a members waiting for the ferry to come across from Kerrera. It’s only a few minutes’ crossing and our hostess was waiting on the other side with her Land Rover. Two of the group had cycled down and the other four of us squeezed into the Land Rover and set off up a steep, single track road, passing the Farm Shop and then turning off on to a rough track full of potholes. Our hostess’s bungalow sat in the middle of nowhere with wonderful views out over the island to Oban, even better now that the sun had come out. My Blip today.

We had a great afternoon - no space or time to describe it - but we were driven down to catch the 3.30pm ferry back to the mainland - my extra today - where I got a lift into Oban.
