Alma Cottage - built in1854
This is a Grade II listed cottage in Teddington which was built in 1854. It is the oldest building in Albert Road which is quite near the station ( Opened in 1868). An adjoining road is Victoria Road. Originally this was a two up two down cottage but the current owners went through the various hoops for listed building planning and extended to one side. They have now lived there since 1975, for nearly 50 years! I went there today for a meeting of the Teddington Society History group - they always host the group. Inside they have retained lots of original features such as the fireplace, so it was interesting to see inside. They also have lots of antique furniture which suits the house and tea was served in real china cups and saucers!
The pub at the end of the road is called the Adelaide, named after the 19C Queen consort. There are quite a few old houses still standing in this part of Teddington.
I have just looked up the word Alma and found that the first battle of the Crimean War in 1854 was the Battle of Alma so I guess that’s why the cottage got its name? The British were victorious but had 2000 casualties.
Earlier I made the fort to wash my car…doing the roof at home as it’s a soft top and then to the local car wash. After that I went to the allotment for a bit and dug up lots of straggling raspberry canes which have not fruited this year..very long roots so it was a good workout. A nice young man has taken over the neighbouring plot and was hard at work clearing it of weeds. I was surprised he was not at work but the is a journalist and his shift starts at 4pm for Eurosport and TNT.
