Nectaring Hornet

European hornets have been flying round and round the ivy bush colliding with other insects and the foliage but not stopping. I was therefore surprised to see this one nectaring right under my nose this morning. As can be seen in my image, they're large, almost the same size as a complete inflorescence. I wasn't concerned about being up close and personal with it as these insects aren't aggressive.

I saw the honey bee in extras fly into a spider's web and expected the spider to appear immediately but there was no sign of it. The poor bee was struggling frantically when a wasp photobombed my image. The wasp escaped quite quickly but the bee was stuck fast. I hoicked it out with a stick but it was so tangled in spider silk that it got stuck to the stick. In my second extra image the spider silk can be seen fouling one of its antennae. It eventually flew off.
