Margie with Snubby 2
Margie has often talked about Snubby, the dog she had as a child. Often when we’re out walking, if she sees a dog, she’ll break into stories of Snubby, and frequently she says, “I wish I could have a dog.”
Snubby was grey and black with (of course) a snub nose, hair that fell into his eyes, and an affectionate nature. I did an internet search for “stuffed animals dementia” and found Memorable Pets, with a large variety of cats, dogs, and baby dolls. Their “Cairn Terrier” seemed to meet the bill, so I ordered it, and today I took it to Margie—and it was a hit.
She broke into tears the instant I pulled him out of the bag. “How did you know? Oh this is SO like Snubby. How wonderful!”
When we left for our walk she was tempted to take him along, but she decided to leave him in her chair. During coffee she talked in detail about her family of origin. “My brother died so young. I wish I could have given him some of these years I’ve had. How old am I? Ninety-eight? That’s old.”
Back at her place, she was surprised all over again to see Snubby 2 waiting for her in her chair, and (Extra) she reacquainted herself with him.
