Memorial
…on the site of Dr Heinrich Hoffmann’s birthplace in Frankfurt, Hesse, Germany.
The inscription reads (translated):
“Here stood the birth house of Dr Heinrich Hoffmann, 1809-1894, author of Struwwelpeter*, an 1848** democrat, a popular Frankfurt physician, and a reformer of psychiatry***.”
* Originally written for his son Carl, this collection of comic strips (worldwide one of the first) later became very popular in Germany, and has been translated into many languages (e. g., Slovenly Peter, transl. by Mark Twain).
** In 1848 an all-German uprising led to the first elected, but short living parliament, holding its meetings in the nearby Paulskirche.
*** Dr Hoffmann managed a major fundraising campaign leading to a new psychiatric clinic, with large humanitarian improvements. He directed the new clinic until his retirement at age 79 (!).
