Life in a Northern Town

Vestrahorn

We’ve had quite a day. First we went to the glacial lagoon - here the Vatnajökull glacial melt water mixes with sea water to become brackish and so the icebergs that calve from the glacier melt quickly. We took a boat trip and witnessed the huge iceberg in extras break in two. The pieces of the icebergs end up on the black sand of the nearby diamond beach.

Afterwards we drove to the Stokksnes peninsula to see if we could get the obligatory reflection photograph in front of Vestrahorn - this requires the perfect mix of tide, sun and breeze (or rather lack of) and we had 2 out of 3. It was an amazing place, really worth the long gravel track to get there.

Then on to Höfn for the absolute best fish and chips I’ve ever eaten - they were so good, they’ve set a standard that it may not be possible to beat. The scenery on the way back to the hotel was jaw-dropping - see extras for some more icebergs and also a random glacier that was just next to the road. The hotel is very Icelandic as you can see from the last extra - tomorrow we head back to Reykjavik and I’m so glad we made the effort to come this far east, it is absolutely stunning out here .
