Mayburgh henge
We made a quick pitstop at this impressive Neolithic henge on our way home. Its banks stand up to three metres high, constructed of pebbles collected from the nearby river. There is a single standing stone at the centre. Apparently, there used to be more, but they have since been removed. It's adjacent to the M6, so there was a lot of traffic noise when we got out of the car. However, once you'd climbed over the bank and into the middle of the henge, nearly all the noise was blocked, and it was quite a peaceful atmospheric spot. Thanks to JeanSnaps for telling me about it.
