a lifetime burning

One that got away?

The male green woodpecker was on the lawn this morning, busily looking for emerging insects, and from the looks of things having quite a successful time of it.  They're nervous feeders so it takes quite a bit of care to get close enough to photograph them - even with a long lens.  I chose this shot from the sequence that I took, as the bird was clearly watching the fleeing insect.

When we were in Portugal last week, we saw loads of hoopoes (a woodpecker we rarely get in the UK) and I really wished that I'd got my long lens and camera with me (although I don't expect my fellow golfers would have been prepared to allow me the leisure to take a shot like this one).  The green woodpecker is a bigger bird and doesn't have the hoopoe's crest, but it is still a beautifully coloured bird.

Today's covid test was again negative so I'm hoping that I just have a very bad cold, while I do have a slight temperature I don't yet feel achey enough for flu - so fingers crossed here!
