Life in a Northern Town

Steam

We’ve had a day of lava and steam on the Reykjanes peninsula, an often overlooked part of Iceland that is very volcanically active. It’s rather other worldly out there and we had a fabulous day.

The main picture is Gunnuhver hot springs - the steam absolutely stinks of sulphur and I’m sure we smell equally as bad now. We also visited the bridge across the continents (I’ll add extras) where the silly photo is required. The landscape could be on another planet - I adore bleak landscapes and love lava so I was in absolute bliss. Plus everywhere was deserted - an added bonus. Lots of lava in extras….

After exploring the eastern end of the peninsula we came back to Keflavík for amazing cakes and coffee, then visited the most recent lava flow - in extras you can see me holding some of the newest Icelandic feature, and also John standing where the old road to Grindavík is now blocked by the lava flow. They’ve built a new temporary road to the Blue Lagoon, but not to Grindavík, which remains evacuated. The volcano is expected to erupt again in the next few months - thankfully it didn’t happen today.

It was great to explore a whole new part of the island, and only 30 minutes from Reykjavik too.

Tomorrow we go north for a couple of days, stopping to walk some goats on the way, as you do.
