Llandaff Cathedral

Today I drove to Cardiff and back, a round trip of 260 miles.
Thank goodness for air conditioning and cruise control

We stopped briefly to see the Epstein statue in Llandaff Cathedral

The cathedral, dating back to 1107 was badly damaged by bombs in the Second World War.

Jacob Epstein was commissioned to design a statue and his aluminium "Majestas" stands on a reinforced concrete arch.

Go Large to see more detail.

You can read more about the cathedral online

I will leave you with a wry comment on the sometimes abstract nature of the work of three great innovators, the poet Gertrude Stein, Sir Jacob Epstein and Albert Einstein. I do not subscribe to these views!

There's a wonderful family called Stein
There's Gert and there's Ep and there's Ein
Gert's poems are bunk
Ep's statues are junk
And no one understands Ein!
