Tomb of William Etty

... and his ghost!

I walked through Museum Gardens today and noticed that the gate into St Olave's ancient churchyard was open. It's usually padlocked. I've never been in there before, so I couldn't resist the open gate. It's a lovely, peaceful, secluded spot with lots of higgledy-piggledy gravestones all older than 1850 when burials were stopped. I think it's open now as part of York's 'Ghosts in the Gardens' trail, which now seems to be an annual autumn event. Expect more blips of the various ghosts!

The most prestigious monument is the tomb of William Etty, the York-born artist and member of the Royal Academy. Etty achieved wide national and international acclaim during his lifetime and is best known for his history paintings containing nude figures. He was involved in the conservation of York Minster and campaigned passionately to oppose plans to demolish York’s city walls.
