We made it through Hurricane Helene
Although I wouldn't recommend the experience for anyone! Not for the faint of heart....
The storm did not seem exceedingly bad for us when it began, a fairly typical Tropical Storm with high winds, gusts of 45-50 mps, The wind made whistling noises and there were some spots of intense rain from the outer storm bands of Hurricane Helene. We lost our power about 7:30 pm last night from high winds knocking a wire down in front of a neighbors house.
Later that evening we were not happy to see the river water coming up higher in back yard and the street was flooded. The water was inching up in front. It continued to come up to the bottom of the foundation of our home. Our ground level floor is about 2.5 feet up from the beginning of the foundation, but it was still quite unnerving.
We watched the levels until 2 am when we could see the water was receding. When we woke up the street was not flooded and in the back the water was down to the dock. Now it is off the dock and in the river where it belongs!
The collage shows how I found my orchid this morning turned over and how it is now, straightened up for Flower Friday. The top left photo shows Steve's shop area where his tent top blew off and he had to cut it away. The other two are photos Steve took during the storm of my dad's tractor with the wheels submerged and another of the river water coming up the the back steps up to our home. Phew. We are feeling very lucky. It's difficult to think of the others who were in Helene's path or those who experienced more flooding than we did.
A friend who didn't lose power let us borrow his generator so our fridge is running! We are using flashlights. With a million people without electricity it could take a while even though I've reported it....
