Flicker tripod

Ever wonder how birds that peck at trees manage to hang on? They have sturdy tail feathers that act as the third leg to their original two, making a sturdy three legged stool. Notice the red streak in the tail propping up this flicker. That is why it is called a Northern Red-shafted flicker.
