He'll Fire Corner

Following on from the War Memorial featured in yesterday's Blip here is the memorial on the Cairnhill behind Rosehearty. It was controversially built here so that it can be seen from across the parish. Unfortunately, it is relatively difficult to access and not at the heart of the community hence the controversy.
Originally the top of the tower had crenellations and the names of the fallen were displayed on boards inside the structure. However, the building became unsafe in the 1960s and the names are now displayed on external granite panels. As well as the names of those members of the armed forces who died in the two world wars the names of those civilians who were killed when a mine washed up and exploded in the harbour during WW1 and during airraids in the second war are recorded. It was not for nothing that this corner of the Aberdeenshire coast was known as 'Hell  Fire Corner.'
