St Mary’s College and the tree…
The University of St Andrews was founded in 1413. The first lectures took place in private homes, but in 1418, Robert of Montrose, the Prior of St Andrews, donated land for the building of a college which was dedicated to St John; this is where St Mary’s College now stands. The New College, as St Mary’s College was commonly known, was founded on in 1538. The West Range and the Founder’s House were built by Archbishop John Hamilton in the mid-1500s. The house includes the Founder's or Stair Tower complete with belfry.
The tree in front of Founder’s House is very significant. The Mary Queen of Scot’s Hawthorn tree was planted by her in 1563 during a regular visit to the town.
St Mary's is the place where Divinity, or Theology, has been taught since 1579.
Didn’t go to our younger son’s rugby game. They won.
Watched The Scottish Parliament’s 25th Anniversary ceremony online this evening. Glad I did.
