St Dunstan in the East
Spent a whole day in London with Emma - so lovely to see her, so great to spend a day with her. And boy, did she do her research - she had planned the day for dry or wet weather, taking in many locations, the majority of which were free.
Main pic is The Church of St Dunstan in the East, which burned in the Great Fire of London (1667) rebuilt only to be bombed in the Blitz in 1941. It now forms a fabulous park right in the midst of the City providing a spot of remarkable tranquillity.
Extra 1 is the London Mithraeum. A roman ruin now almost two floors below current street level. The actual ruins are the sand coloured stone at the lower part of the photo, the "structure" above is beautifully created by light and mist. (The tour starts in darkness) - an ingenious and really interesting display.
Extra 2 Shows some of how the newer high-rise offices in the City are dwarfing the old buildings.
Extra 3 Is Brick Lane - when I said to Emma I'd never been there, we were on a bus inside 5 minutes. Experienced my first salt beef Beigel too - a massive meal in itself at exceptional value.
By the end of the day my knee was a bit stiff, but a great day out.
Thanks Emma!
