Of the earth
For Tiny Tuesday. Thanks to freespiral for hosting.
A couple of weeks ago while walking on the beach near Huntcliff, we picked up a couple of small pieces of the fallen rock. The cliff rises to around 365 ft above the North Sea. (111mts) and there is evidence of life dating back to 350AD.
It is largely layers of alum shales with a deep layer of boulder clay on the surface and a significant band of ironstone through the rock strata which led to mining between 1857 and 1887.
It was used as a location for anti-aircraft guns in the First World War and a radar station and army camp in the second. It now forms part of The Cleveland Way which is a National Trail of some 110 miles in total.
We’ve got this little piece of it in our garden, and when we actually got it, the piece was whole. It’s breaking up now but still looks beautiful.
