The Birnam Oak
Nick had his first day of fishing on the River Tay and we reckon that it must be about 12 years since he last fished Scotland’s longest river.
The weather was rather damp in the morning but dried up in the afternoon for Bertie and I to have a super walk along the river from Birnam to Dunkeld and back.
During our walk we encountered the Birnam Oak which, according to the information board, is a relic of the medieval forest that once grew along the River Tay. Apparently, it was this forest that inspired Shakespeare to write Macbeth.
From the information board I also learned that a mature oak is home to around 300 different insects and provides food and shelter for more living creatures than any other European tree!
As they say, “Every day’s a learning day.”
Quote from Macbeth: “Macbeth shall never vanquished be until Great Birnam Wood to high Dunsinane Hill shall come against him.”
