The dune coastline around the NE corner of Aberdeenshire has always been considered vulnerable to invasion. The 5 sided WW2 pillbox in the main image is situated on Enzie Head a little to the south of St Combs - it commands sightlines along the beach in both directions and along an anti- tank ditch running behind the dunes between here and the Loch of Strathbeg. and is one of a line of 5 pillboxes between here and  Strathbeg.

The extra shows 16th century Inverallochy Castle probably builtby the powerful Cummings on the site of a much earlier defensive structure at a time when the land it overlooked was a loch. The castle was forfeited by the, then owners, the Frasers for their support of of the Jacobites.
