Dolly's Day

Theatre Royal, Newcastle

Headed off to Newcastle this afternoon to the Theatre Royal to see the play " Gerry and Sewell".  The story was originally a book called " The Season Ticket" published in 2000, then a film called " Purely Belter " released later the same year  and in 2022 this stage play was first performed.  Its the first time its been seen by audiences at the Theatre Royal.

The story concerns two Newcastle United fans trying to save money to buy season tickets.  It has some comedy moments but the storyline is basically a grim one of joblessness, poverty, illness, violence etc.  You can see the set in my Extra.  It stayed the same all the way through apart from a  Metro carriage  and an old caravan being wheeled on at the back. I enjoyed it but it was rather a strange production.  At random times a whole bunch of dancers would rush on wearing all black with balaclavas and only their eyes showing.  They would do a routine then go off.  Not sure if they added anything to the show ... but I guess it was a chance for some youngsters to appear on the Theatre Royal stage.

I came out of the theatre at around 4.30pm and had a wander round the shops.  The weather was lovely - sunny and dry.  See my Extra for a view of Greys Monument with the lovely blue sky.

I didn't want to have to rush home and go to Slimming Group so I put a holiday in for tonight.
