Out and About

Hidden Water Features

I've seen enough of these gates now to know a Thirlmere Aqueduct gate when I see one.  Looking over the gate you can some sort of inspection tank near the gate. In the distance is another gate and on the top of the small green hill there are 4 lumps you can see if you zoom in.  Well I can zoom in , you probably can't.  They are probably some of these.  At this point the aqueduct from the Thirlmere reservoir  is crossing north of Staveley, in an  easterly direction on its 100 mile journey to Manchester. It's heading straight for the hill  and the few maps I just consulted suggest the pipes do indeed go through the wood.  Somehow they  tunnelled through it?  And there are many more hills between here and Manchester.  All in all, an incredible feat of Victorian engineering
