Oak galls. On display as part of a feature on how parchment manuscripts were made illegible by Victorian attempts to make them easier to read - galling. Oak galls were used to make ink in medieval Europe. They were ground into powder which was mixed with iron salts and water, and then gum Arabic as a binding agent.
