Losing One's Heritage

This structure has been here longer than I can remember. In fact it has probably been here so long that nobody questions what it is.
It is set out a few feet from the bank and looks like it may be part of a sluice gate, although no gate is actually visible.
I can only assume it was used to regulate the water levels of a nearby canal. No doubt, sometime in the future I will find an answer!
