These structures are peculiar to north west Scotland. They are Iron Age structures which were thought to be fortifications. However more recently there have become to be thought of as more functional than that.

Having paced all around this rather inaccessible one and taken more photos of it than you can shake a Claymore at, I discovered the ruins of the main tower along with a secondary attached building and possibly some out buildings with pastoral grazing land. Further out from it, and encircling the whole were at least 2 raised earth mounds which may have been an initial defensive barrier, or part of an even earlier enclosure or fortification for a family or community.

Tomorrow's shot will illustrate the thickness of the walls. Just how theses large block of stone were cut and placed at this time in history is beyond me.
