THE CLITHEROE KID
Well those of you that are of a certain age, and even older than me, may well remember wee Jimmy Clitheroe aka The Clitheroe Kid. Today I heard a broadcast of his for this first time for many years!!!!
Hubby, Garron and myself decided to head south today and go to Clitheroe Castle. It takes about 1 hour 30 minutes to get there. We went via the A590, A65, A682 and A59 which for me is much better than a shorter way on the M6, at least if you get stuck you have the option to turn round and go back.
A pleasant enough journey, we did get stuck behind a slow moving vehicle for a large part of the journey but we weren't in any hurry so no problem.
We stopped off in Gisburn for coffee and a convenience break at The Deli Coffee Shop there. We did manage to have coffee and cake, chocolate and beetroot for hubby and I, fruit cake Garron - all very delicious.
Thanks to Google maps we did get to the Castle Car Park OK, but then has to guess where the castle was as it couldn't be seen from the car park and there were no signs - bowever we got there. It's a bit of a climb up for Garron but we took our time and made it.
We were very impressed with how beautifully kept the park, war memorial and surrounds were. The Castle Museum was very interesting, lots of local history from ancient times up to the present day, including all the different ways that Clitheroe was spelt or pronounced over the years.
Also there was a broadcast by wee Jimmy Clitheroe which actually made us laugh, much more so than most of today's comedians, well for us anyway. I managed to "persuade" Garron to dress up for a photograph (see extras).
Climbing up the Castle would have been too much for Garron so we didn't do that but we visited the War Memorial and the Pinnacle.
The weather was grey, some showers on the way there but quite pleasant whilst we were walking around.
On the way home, coming back the same way, we stopped off at Lord's Courtyard Cafe just outside Settle and had very nice ham and apple sandwiches (on wholemeal bloomers). This place has changed so many times in the last few years but the food has, for us when we've visited, always been good. It used to be a very posh cafe with posh shops, it is now really pat of Lord's Antiques of Ingleton. The cafe is pleasant though and the food still all local.
We are now back home and believe it nor the sun is now coming out - typical huh!!
A very nice day out.
