african stripes…
…in a
kente cloth
bookmark
i don’t often participate - in the challenges however - couldn’t resist this one - with stripes when i happened - across this wonderful bookmark - i picked up on a journey - i made to africa - many moons ago - i’d forgotten i had - this when i opened - a book i was looking - through and it fell out - and with it a flood - of beautiful memories - of that trip to a land - that was filled with - genuine and thoughtful people - but some of the - worst poverty and desolation - i have ever seen - yet in spite of the conditions - the people remained strong - and steadfast, courageous and tenacious - i had the opportunity to - watch weavers create some - of the most intriguing kente cloths
traditionally kente is handwoven - by the ashanti and ewe people - of ghana and the most unique - feature of the cloth - is its bright colors like gold - red and purple - when making the cloth - a background color is chosen - then designs in contrasting - colors alternate in a harmonious blend - having a piece of kente - is akin to having a bit - of african culture in hand - a sweet remembrance of my - time there and how - precious the people were to me - i will never forget - and always appreciate - how it led to…
a
happy day…..
