The pretty Kaituna Valley, a 30-minute drive from Christchurch, has a little gem on the roadside. It is St Kentigern Church, built in 1933-34. It is constructed of reinforced concrete, Kaituna stone quarried from the hill behind and Port Hills stone, with a slate roof and distinctive saddle-back tower. The lychgate is a modern addition, dedicated in 1989.
