columbarium

when I was in sf for a summer i went to this place called a columbarium. I didn't know what it was at the time but it turned out to be a "cemetery" for cremated remains. it was one of the coolest places I've ever been, in retrospect.

so today when I was at arlington cemetery and I saw they also had a columbarium, I had to go. something so much more powerful about these to me than lines of gravestones, I don't know. though the whole thing was quite powerful, honestly - particularly the new part of the cemetery, where funerals were in progress, graves had been freshly dug, and young mourners filed in for fallen servicemen. it was, to put it mildly, very real.
