Spot The Fungus

I have never wondered why this is called Tar Spot Fungus. I am fascinated that it should have such a descriptive name.  I havent seen much of this in recent years. What I have never noticed before is the bright green ring around the tar spot (if you look closely).

My extra is of a knarled Hawthorn in a field of sheep, hence the lack of growth lower down.
