Maulbronn Monastery
…is a well preserved abbey built in the 12th century, secularised in the 16th century, and from then under the direction of the House of Württemberg. The complex houses a famous boarding school, where writers like Hölderlin, Mörike, and Hermann Hesse were educated.
The fountain shows duke Ludwig Eugen’s coat of arms (“LEHZW” meaning Ludwig Eugen Herzog Zu Württemberg). He followed his despotic brother Carl Eugen, and reigned only from 1793-1795, and died aged 64 after a stroke.
