The Lozarithm Lens

The Woodland Garden (Sunday 13th October 2024)

The Boston Ivy growing on the rear of the outbuilding has been looking magnificent recently. I decided to pop outside to photograph its autumn hues this afternoon only to discover it had all gone! These few leaves were hanging on to the rafters, so they'll have to do.

Lozarithm's Lozarhythm Of The Day:
Karen Dalton - Ribbon Bow (1969)
Guy Garvey played this on his show at lunchtime. The song was first published as Ef I Had a Ribbon Bow in 1929 in a book called Seven Kentucky Mountain Songs Sung By Marion Kirby And John Jacob Niles. Although Niles wrote that he collected and arranged the song it has been suggested that Niles may have actually written it. When Fairport Convention first entered a recording studio in October 1967, their producer Joe Boyd suggested they record this 1930's dance tune, as recorded by Maxine Sullivan in 1940, and it became their first single, and the first version I heard and bought. It then led me to the excellent Maxine Sullivan version. Karen Dalton has rearranged the melody to such a degree that it is barely recognisable. Other versions include those by Odetta and Carolyn Hester.
