Leopard seal
Photo taken with a telephoto lens so I wasn't as close as it might appear in photo. Animal just in the shallows and as it appeared to be injured one of our group reported it to DOC. Turned out it had been reported several times over several days, but each time a ranger arrived it had moved on. A FB article on the page Leapard seals NZ sight noted "that leopard seals come ashore to rest from long stints out at sea - this rest period allows them to build energy for their next trip out. If you do see a seal around, please give them space to sleep. "
