Northerly Aspect
I took a detour on my way home from a quick visit to the Atrium this morning, as an attempt on my part to increase my step count and improve my fitness score on my watch. Sad, really!
This moss-covered garage roof caught my eye because it looked so lush and green, and also because it reminded me of a guided walk that Smithers and I did once with a group in the Lake District, accompanied by an expert in natural navigation and bushcraft.
One of the things the chap taught us was that moss and other foliage tends to grow on the north side of walls and trees because it gets less sunlight, so the conditions are cooler and damper. This is a help when you’re trying to work out in which direction you should be walking. Obviously as I was not far from home I wasn’t lost, but the advice we were given was sound because this roof is, in fact, north-facing.
