Empty Horizon
The Lovely Ange and I explored the old WW2 defence battery on Godley Head today. It's a network of concrete pads, bunkers, rusted bolts and old wiring. Building commenced in 1939 and they were operational by 1942. The guns were fired in practice but never in defence, for which I am very grateful.
I tried to imagine how it would have been, sitting at the other end of the world from such a massive conflict, waiting. As I was standing inside the empty gun battery, I could hear a distant aircraft banking over the far peninsular. Seventy years ago, how would that have felt? Would I have thought "Here they come. This is it"?
Empty horizons, day after day. To all those who waited so long ago: thanks.
