Demolition Day

The start of a 3 day job.

I rented a dumpster for this job. I decided it would be cheaper to do that than it would be for 2 of us to be running back and forth to the dump all day. At least this way if there were any questions, I would be there to answer them.

The house is on a corner lot, it was built in 1903. It is where women met and fought to be able to vote. One of my part time workers volunteers here, helping to look after the garden. The Local Council House, as it is called, received a grant to do some maintenance on the house and property.  They wanted some work done on the gardens, more than what E could do my herself, so she asked me if I wanted to give them a quote. Being a woman owned business, they were quite happy to have me give a quote which they accepted.

The house is in a prominent position, on the corner of a busy street in the south end of Halifax. With lots of pedestrian traffic, we had to keep the sidewalks clear of debris.

There was an overgrown privet on one corner, this is the one shown in my blip today. There were 2 overgrown privet on the other front corner. It was difficult to do any kind of maintenance on them as they were about 10 feet tall and at least that in width too. Because they are so close to the sidewalk, people were always complaining about them hanging over the sidewalk.  We cut them down to about 3 feet tall, leaving some greenery that was coming from the bottom. The privet will now put out some new growth next year, and they can be kept in a size that is easier to maintain.

Our other project for the day was removing some sod so we can build a gravel pathway. People do cut across the lawn, now they will have a path to follow. I had rented a sod cutter for the day, but had to return it because it would not work properly. Obviously someone else had rented the machine between Thursday, when we had it on another job, and today. Some of the workers spent the morning removing the sod with a pick axe.

The job continues tomorrow.
