Berwick upon Tweed
Today we drove to Berwick upon Tweed to walk around the town on the wall. What an interesting place it was. The fortified defences where built in the time of Elizabeth the 2nd and it was her biggest ever single expenditure. Berwick itself has amazing history as it has changed hands between the Scottish and the English many times, either having been captured in battle or gifted to raise funds.
The most interesting fact i thought was that at one time it was neither Scottish or English, even the declaration of the Crimean War against Russia in 1853, which Queen Victoria supposedly signed as "Victoria, Queen of Great Britain, Ireland, Berwick-upon-Tweed and all British Dominions" When the war was over and the peace treaty was signed they forgot to include Berwick upon tweed. So in fact Berwick upon tweed was actually still at war with Russia until 1966 when another peace treaty was signed.
I do hope i got the fact right as it was written from memory, lol.
Todays image, as you can see, was processed twice so i thought i would include both, press L for large.
