Eye to Eye

Levada Caldeirao Verde …

… or the Green Cauldron. Levadas are irrigation canals that were built to carry water to agricultural crops around the villages. There is a whole network on Madeira Island. How the farmers dug and built up the channels is beyond me. The terrain is so steep and in a jungle of trees and ferns.

The waterfall at the end of this 7km hike, is 100m high and very impressive. Thank goodness I had my phone with its very wide angle lens to take photos! There have been rockfalls here in the recent past so you have to be on alert!

On the return drive we called into Santana to see the traditional building with thatched rooves. There are 4 that have been painted rather garishly and which sell tourist trinkets so I have put one that is actually still lived in, in extras.

Going out for dinner at Porta do Sol where we are staying, tonight.
